memorial day weekend @ the lake

After a disappointing morning with the balloons, we headed down to Smith Lake for the rest of the long weekend. Banks took a friend [Eppes] for the first time and they entertained each other perfectly [Uncle David said a friend was a must from now on].

Each overcast and rainy morning was spent consuming a huge breakfast and playing competitive games of WAR...

…but each afternoon the sun came out and the lake came alive!

We spent our weekend paddling around in kayaks…

Mary Reese was pouting because they didn’t jump off the dock in the direction she wanted. The boys got with her program on the next go around…

…and all was well again.

We cruised the lake [thanks to David and Popsy for hammering a boat plug back into place]…

Owen had a huge grin on his face the entire time he was on the boat.

We sunned from the back of the boat…

What lake trip wouldn’t be complete without some delicious food? Saturday night we grilled hamburgers and hotdogs to go with our lake fries and baked beans. On Sunday the men smoked a boston butt and a couple of slabs of ribs…

…to accompany potato salad, slaw and “Papaw’s Famous grilled corn on the cob” [Mary Reese was asking me why the corn was white instead of yellow. I was telling her my Papaw Leo use to grow the best white corn which my Nana used to turn into creamed corn. Mary Reese started referring to the grilled corn as “Papaw’s Famous” recipe].

We rounded out a fun weekend around a “campfire”…
