mile run

Thursday was a big day.  It was...

DCMSMileRun

THE Mile Run!

The entire school loads up on buses and heads to Delano Park for the mile run part of their physical fitness test.

They have trained during PE.  They have been learning about pacing themselves.

In their IB unit, the 2nd Graders have been learning about how to become balanced individuals by making good choices in nutrition, exercise, sleep, school work, free time activities, etc.  So the mile run was a perfect way to wrap up their unit.

They were dressed in their new "dry fit" Mile Run/Field Day shirts.

They were prepared to run!

I love the Start/Finish Line banner complete with an official time clock...

Last year they had race bibbs.  This year it was big time...

...they got to use the "chips"!

While the 1st graders were ran their mile, the 2nd graders were cheered them on.  Mary Bradford and Banks waiting to cheer at the halfway point...

The runners  finally rounded the corner...

I love how they all cheered for all those 1st graders!  His school is so wonderful about all teaching the children how to work together as a team and support each other.  As a parent...it makes me smile because we have to do that as adults!

After the 1st graders passed the halfway point, we moved to the finish line to cheer on one of our favorites...

ColwellFinishes

Colwell is my god son.  So Banks and Colwell have deemed themselves god brothers.  Rebecca and I think it is hysterical!

After all the 1st graders crossed the finish line, it was time for the 2nd graders to line up...

They gave their chip tie an extra twist or two...

His teacher [Mrs. Hughes] is in the background in the black hat cheering him on!

Here he is coming up to the finish line...

It was a photo finish with his friend Sam Smith...

They finished strong together...

The official time was 8:28.  He shaved off 41 seconds from last year.  He was a little disappointed because last year he finished 8th in his grade...this year he was 12th.

After the race, they enjoyed...

...popcicles!

After they all recovered, they climbed in the tree for a quick class picture...

...before loading up on the bus and heading back to school to finish out the day!

We have had a fabulous 2nd Grade Year!  I can't believe we only have about 6 more weeks!
