Saturday morning we smelled something burning in the kitchen but couldn't find where it was coming from until...
I opened the pantry door and noticed a pile a burnt paper in the microwave. Guess who the culprit was?
Owen! He has discovered the microwave and unfortunately it is on this level in our pantry.
On a good note...do you see that passy in his mouth? We are now passy free!!! Way to go Owie! He has gotten really attached to that thing lately. I got rid of Banks's at about 18 months and it was easy as pie. So I knew I needed to start working on Owen before his addiction got out of hand. Friday morning I dropped him off at school and unbeknownst to me his passy was in my car. When I picked him up they said they never found his passy but he did fabulously without it. I took that as my sign...it was time to say good-bye to the passy. He fussed a little bit Saturday morning when he woke up but other than that he has been perfectly fine without it.

fun friday
On the last Friday of each month, Mary Reese's school has Fun Friday for all the well behaved children. August's Fun Friday was Relay Races!
Mary Reese got to race with her new friend Amelia...
Then she had to jump through hula hoops...
...and then over some hurdles...
They ended their Fun Friday with popcorn and lemonade...

It was also Yellow Day for all the Kindergarteners. They study a different color each week and on Friday they wear the color and bring something small that color to share. [Thanks Kate for sharing the pictures.]

couple of cousins birthdays
Last Sunday the kids, Debbie and I headed south to celebrate Carter's 3rd Birthday and Callen's 1st Birthday. After an early lunch & a little shopping with Aunt Stacey, we made our way to their house for the big celebration.
Carter was super excited to see all his cousins [especially Mary Reese]. Before dinner they played in Carter & Callen's new tree house...
Banks & Carter played a little football...
...while Owen played a little basketball...
Until they collapsed in the grass...
Did you notice the sticker on Banks's shirt? Let me give you a little close up...
Yes, I got pulled over on the south side of Cullman. I topped a hill and noticed about 10 State Troupers all with people pulled over. About that time, Banks informed me there was one behind me. Great! I pulled to the side of the road where he informed me I was going 10 miles over the speed limit. I ended up not getting a speeding ticket. Just a warning for not having my proof of insurance in the car! Thank you Trooper Dunn for being so sweet! He gave all the kids a Junior Trooper sticker...they were trilled!
Now back to the festivities...
We enjoyed a delicious & delightful pulled pork dinner with all the fixings...
After dinner, it was time for cake! First we sang Happy Birthday to Carter...
Then it was Callen's turn...
She wasn't overly impressed with the cake...
But someone else was...
Owen was thrilled Callen didn't woof down her cake...
He couldn't believe we were actually giving him free reign...
...but he was sure glad we did...
We had a fabulous time celebrating our cousins birthdays! We are so thankfully the live so much closer now! Happy Birthday Carter & Callen!

Family Favorite: Sausage Balls
Now that school is back in session, I have to be on my toes with breakfast. Leisurely morning breakfasts are now weekends only. My family is not huge cereal eaters...they prefer a hot breakfast. So at least once a week, we chow down on sausage balls!
Sausage balls are quick & easy. I made them in double recipes and freeze them. Then I can bake them in small batches...and we always have fresh sausage balls. It makes for an quick & easy hot breakfast.
Four ingredients [at room temperature] is all you need...
The original recipe calls for Tabasco but I use Frank's Hot Sauce. If you don't like your sausage balls hot & spicy...you could use 1 roll of hot sausge and 1 roll of mild or both mild. We like things hot & spicy around here!
I mix my sausage & hot sauce to taste in my Kitchen-Aid mixer with the paddle attachment. I then add the Bisquick [a little at a time] and mix until it is incorporated. Finally I add the cheese, mixing again until incorporated.
Then I roll the sausage mixture into 1-inch balls, placing them on a parchment lined baking sheet...
I pop the baking sheet into the freezer for a few hours. [I put a layer of parchment paper down so the sausage balls don't stick to the baking sheet during the freezing process.] When the sausage balls are frozen solid, I stick them in a freezer zip-lock bag until I am ready to bake.
I just put the number of sausage balls I want to bake on a lightly greased, aluminium foil lined baking sheet [it makes the cleanup extremely quick when you are trying to get out the door].
So on busy school mornings while I am showering & getting ready, the aroma of sausage balls is coming out of my kitchen...
I remove the sausage balls from the baking sheet onto a paper towel lined plate to absorb the excess grease. My children love to find these on the breakfast table [and if there are any left, they make a great afternoon snack].
The recipe I use is from Cotton Country Cooking [Junior League of Morgan County]. It was first published in 1972. They did a reprint of the book for its 25th Anniversary and this recipe was picked as one of their favorites from over the years.
Cheese & Sausage Balls*
1 heaping cup grated sharp Cheddar cheese
1 lb. hot sausage
2 c. Bisquick
Tabasco to taste [I use Frank's]
Have all ingredients at room temperature. Combine ingredients [I do mine in my Kitchen-Aid mixer] and shape into 1-inch balls. Bake at 350˚ for 20 minutes [30 minutes if frozen].
*The above recipe is for a single batch
Enjoy a stressfree school day breakfast [like Friday when I had to get to 4 different schools by 8:00...Owen ate his in the car]!

same & different
We have a friend who teaches 2nd Grade at Mary Reese's school. She happened to visit Mary Reese's classroom while they were doing an activity. Mrs. Lowery was talking about sorting. Her class was trying to decide what things were same & different about these 3 children...
Her friend Deuce said Mary Reese was different because she had on a dress. Then he said Devin was different from Mary Reese & Destiny because Devin was a boy...
Then they worked on a same/different worksheet...
...circling the same things & crossing out the different item.
And then she got busy coloring another sheet...
I love getting surprise pictures during the day [Thanks Kate]! Even better...I love hearing Mary Reese telling me about what they were doing in the pictures.

Meet the Raiders
Friday night, the DHS Booster Club hosted a "Meet the Raiders" fundraiser to kick off the upcoming school year. The little girls who participated in the Cheer Camp where invited to cheer with the big girls on the football field...
These 2 found each other immediately and were joined at the hip...
They had not seen each other all week long! They have both started Kindergarten but at different schools.
They cheered...
...and danced...
...side-by-side!
It is great to be a Red Raider...
We are looking forward to a little fall weather and some Friday night football!

Kiddie Carnival
Thursday night we were invited to the Kiddie Carnival for a double birthday party. Banks was really worried that he would be too big to ride. But he was the first one of my children to find something to ride on...
Mary Reese ran to the mini-coaster and hopped on with Emma Hensley...
Banks also fit on the coaster. Jack thought he might like to ride until it got going...
Owen thought he was big enough to ride too...
After the look of horror he shot me after the first round, he decided he liked it.
They also rode the Kiddie Carnival's version of the Tilt-a-Whirl...
I thought Owen would love riding the baby cars. At first he wasn't too impressed...
But then he rode it so long, he had the entire ride to himself...
Banks was looking forward to riding the airplanes all night long. As soon as they started up, he hopped on...
Mary Reese grabbed a seat on the plane with her friend Mary Bibb...
...and rode round and round...
It all took me back to 5 years ago. This was our first trip to the carnival...
It seems like yesterday they were that size. The years have flown by!!! I have a feeling I am going to blink and they will be graduating from high school.
We ended the night with these adorable cupcakes...
...ice cream and juice boxes...

babies & tiaras
tiaras
Mary Reese was invited by sweet Lisa at the Cricket by the Creek to have her picture taken with the current Miss America. When Mary Reese found out she was going to meet a real beauty queen she claimed she needed a tiara. I reminded her that she had the one she got from Disney's Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. She said she couldn't wear that one because it itched! When Lisa heard about the dilemma, she sent her a fabulous hot pink one.
Last night Mary Reese carefully picked out the perfect dress, shoes and rhinestone necklace to match her new tiara. Debbie picked her up at school and got her ready for her big meeting...
They headed to the Cricket...
...where they chatted with Miss America 2010 Caressa Cameron...
...got her autograph...
...and even got a signed 8 x 10 to commemorate their time together...
I think they had a nice visit! Mary Reese has not stopped talking about it.

We have a new cousin to play with...
Leo Thompson Willis joined the world a little after lunch today weighing in at 8 lbs. 7 ozs.
After we dropped Banks off at ball practice, we ran by the hospital to take a peek...
Mary Reese and Owen loved meeting him! We can't wait to play with him!!! Congrats Uncle Topher, Tina, Maddie & Olivia.
