1st days

I can't believe we just finished another 1st day of another school year!  We have been gearing up for the new year for over a week.  We spent the last few days of summer vacation...

summerreading

...finishing up on our summer reading list.  Both Banks and Mary Reese looked forward to our trips to the local library to check out "summer reading" books.  We have read some great ones this summer!

We also hit Target and The Learning Tree for all our school supplies...

MR&BSupplyShopping2010

They had the best time picking out all the items on their lists!

Last Friday, the names were posted at Mary Reese's school.  We headed to the school and where thrilled to discover her name...

CheckingoutMRClass

...on Ms. Lowery's Kindergarten list!  She is the same teacher Banks had for Kindergarten.  She is one of those people God placed on this earth to teach [she has taught Kindergarten for something like 35 years].  We were also thrilled to see Isaac and Deuce [from PreK last year] on the list as well!

We had to wait the entire weekend to find out who Banks' teacher would be for 2nd Grade [his school didn't post until last Monday].  We were dying to find out so we raced to the school as fast as we could...

CheckingoutBClass

He was excited to see his name under Mrs. Hughes [another teacher God put on this earth to teach.  This year she has moved up from teaching Kindergarten on and off for over twenty years to 2nd Grade].  He was thrilled to see Mary Bradford, Ian, Clint and Mariah under Mrs. Hughes too!

I wish I had a picture of his face when he found this cool letter in the mailbox...

MrsHughesLetter2010

So Wednesday afternoon Banks gathered his school supplies and headed to meet his new teacher.  Banks found Mrs. Hughes in Room 27...

[Did you notice his missing front top tooth?  Popsy pulled it that weekend.]

He went into the classroom and found some "mail" in his "mailbox".  It gave him instructions on putting away his supplies for the year.  He got right to the task at hand...

UnloadingSchoolSupplies

Once we were done, we headed down the 1st Grade hall to visit dear Mrs. Propst.  Banks is excited about 2nd Grade and Mrs. Hughes but he truly loved being in a 1st Grader with Mrs. Propst.

Last night we got organized...got our new backpacks packed, our lunch boxes filled and our clothes laid out.

We also packed up some goodies to help our teachers make it through a very tiring 1st day...

Banks took a special snack to share with this class...

2ndGradeGoodies

...Mary Reese only goes ½ day today and tomorrow so she is going to take one later in the week.

This morning went extremely smooth!  I didn't have to drag anyone out of the bed, they all liked the sausage balls I fixed for breakfast, no big fights over their wardrobe, and everyone was cheerfully ready on time!!!

The only complaint I heard was from Banks about taking his picture made...

ReadytoGo1stDay

...someday [I'm sure] he will thank me for all these pictures!  He was embarrassed because the air conditioning men were watching [yes, the upstairs a/c unit has been out for a week but tonight it is finally cooling thanks to our new unit].

I dropped Mary Reese off with Mrs. Lowery...

She found a seat across from our new friend Amelia...

Then I dropped Banks off with Mrs. Hughes...

MrsHughes&Banks1stDay

He got right to work on a word search containing all the names of his classmates...

MorningWork1stDay

Mary Reese called me after she was released at noon.  She had a great day!  Her biggest concern was that someone was wearing sandals and Mrs. Lowery told them they needed to wear tennis shoes every day!

After Banks got out of school, we ran through Popsy's office for a little teeth pulling session...

ToothPull

The other top front tooth had been hanging on by a thread but wouldn't budge!  Popsy and Molly put a little numbing cream on it and after a good yank...it was out!

So for the 2nd day of 2nd Grade, he will be a toothless wonder...

AlliWantforChristmas

I guess his 2 front teeth will be on his Christmas list this year!!!

Both Banks and Mary Reese had a fabulous first day!  I am excited for all they are going to learn, do & experience this year!  We are very fortunate to have such an amazing public school system with such amazing, experienced teachers!

the butterfly project

All summer long I have enjoyed herbs & zinnias in my kitchen windowsill...

herbs&zinnia

When we went to the lake for our staycation the jar fennel drank all its water, but we did find a nice surprise...

catepillar

A catepillar had made a home...and didn't seem to mind that the fennel was dead as a doornail!  For several days he crawled back and forth from the fennel to a small pot of ivy [also in the windowsill].  He finally got into cocoon postition on a stem of ivy...

The next morning he was in his cocoon...

About 12 days later, this is what we found...

A beautiful butterfly!

baby bieber

I broke down and got Owen's hair cut for the first time today...guess I thought he needed a back to school do?

Here is is before shot...

OBeforeCut

He did fabulous.  He just sat in the chair and let Kelli trim away...

OFirstCut

After his trim, he got a little style...

Here is the finished product with our family hairdresser [yes, she cuts all 5 of our hair]...

O&K

We said he looked like a baby Justin Bieber. a.k.a Baby Bieber

Here is a back view of the new do...

OFinishedProduct

He looks like such a big boy!  I miss that long wild hair - it fit his wide open personality - but it was time for a toddler do.

Now for a walk down memory lane...since I didn't have the blog back then.

Like I said before, Kelli cuts the entire family's hair.  We have followed her to 3 different salons.  She has now given all 3 of my children their first hair cut.

Banks was 23 months old before his first haircut...

BAfterCut

He had beautiful curls that I could not bring myself to cut off.  We did trim the bangs a little bit [this was 4 days before Mary Reese was born].

Mary Reese was about 18 months she got her first cut...

MRFirstCut

She hated every minute.  Thankfully after a few cuts, she warmed up to the idea & now acts like a big girl!

barbie dream house

I always go back to school a few weeks before all the teachers & students.  My in-laws graciously keep my children during the few weeks between my start date and theirs.

Mary Reese has spent her weeks playing with this...

MRDreamHouse

My mother-in-law's Barbie Dream House...

BDreamHouse

She looked up the price of the dream house in these catalogs...

BarbieMags

Can you guess how much it was?  $8.00 - isn't that unbelievable?

Mary Reese's Barbies have enjoyed gossiping on the couch...

Some of the clothes were hand knitted by another relative.

The Barbie dream house even came with a picture of Ken...

Good thing they are back together!

She has been hauling Barbies & accessories back & forth in this vintage case...

Mary Reese has loved playing with all things vintage Barbie!

golf tourney take 3

Last weekend, Jody organized the 3rd Annual Patrick Murphree Memorial Golf Tournament.  All the money raised funds a scholarship at the University of Alabama.  In 3 years, over $30,000 dollars has been deposited into the scholarship!

We ended up with 22 teams again who came out on one of the hotest days of the year to support the cause.  [We have lucked out in the 2 prior years with cooler weather...so we were due a scoarcher!]

My brother & family have moved back to the south, so he was able to join his high school friends this year...

TeamBrother

Uncle Nicholas, Benji, Wes & J. Robert [3 of these were roomates their freshman year at Alabama...can you guess which one doesn't belong?  Maybe the Auburn shirt was a dead giveaway.]

Since my brother played, we got to spend some time with the cousins...

Callen & Banks

Mary Reese & Banks helped me register the golfers.  Then Banks had to leave for baseball practice.  We didn't tell him that it wasn't going to be your typical practice...

Banks Slip n Slide

They did batting practice with water balloons and sliding practice on slip-n-slides!  After looking at the pictures [thanks Cheryl], I think a good time was had by all!

After I got Owen settled for a nap with Debbie & Banks returned from practice, we grabbed a golf cart to check in on the action.  We met up with...

Uncle David [Patrick's Dad]

We were very fortunate to have Tony Chachere back to cook dinner for all the players...

BanksCheckingOutPLM

Banks & Popsy checking out the beginnings of a huge pot of jambalaya.  Tony & crew treated all the golfers to fried catfish & jambalaya after they completed the tournament.  Everything was delicious & delightful!

During clean up, Owen found a cool site to play in...

OwieIcePLM

He had a ball playing in all the ice after it was dumped from the coolers.

The older children cooled down with an ice fight in the sand trap...

IceWarsPLM

Thanks to everyone who endured the heat to help make this tournament [and scholarship] a success!  We hope to see everyone & more back next year!

pickles & popsicles

A friend of my mom's gave her a bunch of cucumbers...

Cucumbers

Earlier in the summer I had found my Granny's pickle recipe inside one of my Nana's cookbooks, so I decided to turn the cucumbers into Granny's Crispy Luncheon Pickles.

Mary Reese helped me slice cucumbers, onions & peppers...

PickleHelper

We added some salt & let them soak for 3 hours...

ZukesOnionPepper

Then we drained them & packed them into jars with some fresh dill sprigs.

I boiled some vinegar, sugar & spices.  Then poured the boiling vinegar mixture into the jars...

PickleReadytoSeal

I placed the jars in boiling water...

This summer has been a scorcher!  Just about each afternoon, we take a popsicle break.  Owen loves to see the popsicles flying out of the freezer...

...I just wish he wasn't so messy...

...but I usually just turn on the sprinkler to clean him up...

He thinks that is pretty fun too!
